Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary
For centuries, birds our feather friends have fascinated us and their flying, brilliant
colors and extraordinary nesting, hunting and migrating habits have been a mystery
to us. The State of Uttar Pradesh has been bestowed with one of the best bird diversity
by nature. Of the 1300 species of Birds that are found in India, Uttar Pradesh has
around 550 species of both migratory birds or the year. The migratory birds are
very special as they as they are the one which vsit the Indian Subcontinent after
crossing the Himalayas to escape the servere winters of the Palearctic regions i.e
from Siberia, Europe and Central Asia.
The Gamgetic Plans of Uttar Pradesh are dotted with water bodies consisting of marshes
and shallow lakes which form an ideal refuge for these bird. Keeping in mind the
importance of conserving and the need to establish Sanctuaries to protect and provide
safe refuge to the Birds, twelve Bird Sanctuaries have been established. “Nawabganj”
a marsh shallow lake of around 2.25 square kilometers, which for a long time had
been the home to a great variety of birds, was declared as a Bird Sanctuary in the
year 1984. The sanctuary protected under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection
Act 1972, is ideal for Bird watchers, Photographers and those going in for a peaceful
walk in harmony with nature. Nawabganj is also an Important Bird Area (IBA), an
area recognized as being globally important habitat for the conservation of bird
