Tendu leaves

The Tendu leaf has typical importance as secondary forests produce. Tendu is a naturally occurring plant. The leaves are used in making Bidis. Tendu in India are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its bordering states of Bihar, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.In Uttar Pradesh it is found in Sonbhadra, Mirjapur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Chitrakoot, Karvi, Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi and Lalitpur districts.Tendu leaf come out in the month of March, which are suitable for making Bidis. Collection work of these leaves is done during the first week of May and last week of June. This work is done by members of the weaker sections of the society.Out of 90 percent people belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and tribal families.

Allocation of Tendu leaves collection task to the UP Forest Corporation

The task of collection and marketing Tendu in all areas of the state has been assigned to UP Forest Corporation since 1983.The Forest Corporation has prepared a Tendu Directory to perform Tendu collection tasks smoothly. As per the provisions given in the directory methodology of Tendu collection will be as follows:-

Tendu Action Plan

Before starting the Tendu task respective Regional Manager shall prepare an organizational structure and develop a project and submit it for approval to the Managing Director for the exploitation/processing of Tendu in their area each year before the month of Jan / Feb. UP Forest Corporation Managing Director will issue the directory of Tendu operations.

Regional Manager will take the following actions on the basis of the approved project.

Prepare details of the personnel necessary for operational management and submit additional demand of personnel to the Director.

To calculate requirement of various disposable materials and writing instruments and act to ensure the supplies. (the proceedings for the supply of Hasian bags will be done by the headquarters).

Deployment of personnel.

Regional Manager will take the following actions on the basis of the approved project.

Hold a meeting with the former divisional logging managers before starting the task of Tendu and issue instructions for operation.

To select areas for Tendu culture, get administrative and financial approval from headquarters and execute the operational task and culture work before 45 days of Tendu collection.
